Milan is the best. And the reason is simple - he’s taken me from nearly no usable knowledge of Serbian to somewhat conversational in a matter of months. Before starting, I had been highly skeptical about private lessons - promising personalization, fluency, ease - easy to promise, hard to deliver. My wife (Serbian) found Milan’s IG page, so I messaged him and he proposed a video call to explain how the process works. I need to start speaking asap, so he said we’d focus on the two most common cases and then move on to the others once I’m comfortable. We’d focus on vocabulary I’d realistically need for speaking with friends and family - food and travel! We’d leave out some of the complex plural forms until singular is second-nature. If I’m doing well, he’d speed up; if I need help, he’d slow down. Every lesson plan would walk me through what I’ll learn for the day, step-by-step. He’d give me homework that’s relevant, and that’s the right balance in difficulty so it’d push me and test what I’ve learned, but not so difficult I’d become discouraged. What was also surprising is that he teaches etymology alongside the coursework, so I sometimes find myself being able to guess what words might mean based on words I’d already learned! There are so many other things I could rave about, but the one that’s most important to me is that for the first time in nearly a decade of having been with my wife, I can finally have actual conversations with my mother-in-law who doesn’t speak much English. Admittedly they’re not complex conversations (yet!), but Milan has put me in a position where we can finally have conversations! Throughout my life, I’ve picked up some French, German, Latin, Swedish, and even a tad of Arabic - somehow, Serbian stands as the most intimidating. I have been studying with Marija since September 2024. At first, we had lessons twice a week, and later we switched to one lesson per week.
